Maternus Beringer (1580 - post 1632):  Domine in multitudine misericordiae tuae, canon at the octave below
source: Musicae, das ist der freyen lieblichen Singkunst (Nuremberg 1610)
scoring: ST or AB
This canon introduces the pupil to the usage of the exachordum molle (soft hexachord); that is the notes spanning from F to D with a B flat. These six notes must always be sung «ut re mi fa sol la», no matter whether they are flatted or sharped: see the first F# at bar 9 of the antecedent.

Maternus Beringer (1580 - post 1632):  Quemadmodum desiderat cervus, canon at the octave below
source: Musicae, das ist der freyen lieblichen Singkunst (Nuremberg 1610)
scoring: ST or AB
This canon spans just a minor seventh from C to B flat; that is a natural hexachord plus a semitone. After Beringer made sing the pupil a canon that spanned six notes from C to A (natural hexachord), he introduced here the concept of “one note over the La” (Hexachordum mit einer Noten nechst über das La), which must be always pronounced “Fa” and sung just a semitone higher than La (B flat).
The narrow range of this canon fits any size of recorders, taking for granted that the pair should play the canon at one octave distance.

Cesare Negri (c. 1535 - post 1604):  Pavaniglia

source: ’t Uitnement Kabinet. 2 vols (Amsterdam 1646-49)

This piece was conceived for two recorders in C (either sopranos or tenors); the bass recorder can easily double the continuo line and its utilisation is ad libitum.

This canon spans just a sixth from C to A; that is a natural hexachord. Indeed, this is the first vocal exercise with lyrics included in Beringer’s treatise. The narrow range fits any size of recorders, taking for granted that the pair should play the canon at one octave distance.

Opus 37 was conceived for solo piano, but it works well if we separate the melody line from the rest of the score and assign it to another instrument.
The original score is in D minor.

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695):  Ground - ZD 221

Arranged from the original score for solo harpsichord in C minor.
The attribution to Henry Purcell has been questioned, since the piece appears at the beginning of a harpsichord suite ascribed to William Croft, and indeed catalogued as D 221.

scoring: AB
Arranged from the original score for treble recorder and violin in A minor. Divisions are editorial.
The arrangement follows quite exactly the original score, since the first line was already thought for a treble recorder in G, while the lower line – although it was thought for two violins in unison – perfectly fits a bass recorder.

Ours is a substantial arrangement of this beautiful aria. Indeed, I added divisions and harmonised the bass line loosely, but summing up I think any 17th century player would have done the same.

Giuseppe Sarti (1729 - 1802):  Variazioni del Minuetto La ra dell’Opera La Grotta di Trofonio
scoring: A (Harpsichord)
The original score in Bb major is for «Cembalo con violino obligato»; that is, the harpsichord plays a more important role than the violin. Mine is a quite loose arrangement, which moves phrases from the harpsichord part to the recorder one, does not strictly respect the original structure and gets rid of all the repeat marks.
The original composition – taken from the opera La grotta di Trofonio that Antonio Salieri composed in 1785 – is an aria for soprano and orchestra sung by the opera’s female protagonist, Ofelia, who mocks the eponymous Trofonio and his grotto.

Luigi Cherubini (1760 - 1842):  Et vitam venturi saeculi for double choir
scoring: SSAATTBB
As in the great works in which Bach’s speculative constructivism is manifested, in this Credo by Cherubini the merely technical fact is transcended and spiritually transfigured precisely in the moments in which it finds its apparently most abstract implementation. And this happens precisely in the concluding fugue on a Gregorian Cantus firmus (Et vitam venturi saeculi) that constitutes almost half of the entire work.
Apart from the very high technical and contrapuntal level of this long composition, there is its perfect enjoyment in both playing it with recorders and listening to it.
Our edition needed only minor interventions to the parts of the two basses, which in a few places were moved to the upper octave.

The original score is in Bb major, but indeed it works better a tone up, in C.
As you may see from the original parts, in our edition all the quavers (eighth notes) placed after dots have been reduced to semiquavers (sixteenth notes) as prescribed by the baroque style. Furthermore, groups of two quavers have been normalised to dotted quaver + semiquaver when requested by imitation with other parts.
