Louis-Antoine Dornel (c. 1685 - 1765):  Sonate en quatuor in D minor
source: Livre de simphonies (Paris 1709)
scoring: AA (Oboe, Bc)
Adapted and transposed from the original score in B minor for three violins and continuo. The original print generically names the three treble parts «dessus» without any instrumental specification.
Transposing the sonata to D minor, the first two treble parts fit two treble recorders, while the third dessus may be played on a modern oboe, which can descend to the low Bb, or on any treble instrument.

source: Sonate da camera a tre. Due violini e violone. Op. 14 (Modena 1692)

Anonymous (XVI cent.):  En m’en revenant / Poi che a noi rimena / More palatino
scoring: AATB
This melody has had numerous arrangements since 1597 and throughout the 17th century. It is known for at least three textual incipits, but we do not know who the composer was. I decided to arrange it because a few days ago I published a capriccio by Frescobaldi based on an aria with the same text incipit but different music. Comparing the two compositions, I think my point will be clear to everyone.

Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583 - 1643):  Capriccio sopra l’aria «Or che noi rimena» in partite
source: Il primo libro di capricci fatti sopra diversi soggetti et arie (Rome 1624)
scoring: SATB
I am not usually partial to the music I publish and play. But this piece by Frescobaldi is one of the most beautiful works of Italian early baroque I have ever heard.
I wish I knew the original aria.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644 - 1704):  Sarabande
source: Mensa sonora seu musica instrumentalis (Salzburg 1680), Pars I
scoring: AATB
The work Mensa sonora was conceived for strings and continuo, but often these dances may be adapted for recorders with or without a harpsichord accompaniment.
In particular, this sarabande works very well for four recorders with some editorial divisions of the top line on the repeats.

source: Trioos, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gighe (Amsterdam 1696)
scoring: A (Bc)
This dance, in its simple elegance, lends itself very well to diminution.
The original score, as in all of Anders’s collection, is for two recorders and continuo: I have arranged it for solo treble recorder and harpsichord by adding the divisions to the recorder part.

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695):  Man is for the woman made
source: The Mock Marriage (1695) - Z 605
scoring: STTB
This was originally a song composed for The Mock Marriage (1695). From this version we have the vocal line and the continuo.
In 1696, John Playford published the simple textless melody of this song in his The Second Part of the Dancing Master, entitled Man was for Woman made, and gave a coreography for it.
My arrangement adds two middle voices to the original score, adapts some passages and adds some divisions.

Traditional:  O dormi, blandule Jesu
scoring: SATB
This is a traditional German melody that originally had Latin lyrics about the Nativity. The musicologist Karl Riedel (1827-1888) arranged it and added German lyrics to it.
My arrangement retains the original melody and Riedel’s lyrics; the rest is mine.

Anonymous (XVII cent.):  Chi d’Amor non vuol le pene
source: Venetian manuscript of the end of the Seventeenth Century
scoring: C or SB (Bc)
The original score is for soprano singer and continuo.
I added divisions on the Da Capo repeat.
The bass recorder doubles the continuo line and it must be intended as ad libitum; furthermore, it preferably should be played only when a soprano recorder plays the upper part.

I have arranged it reconstructing the basic bass and assigning the bass variations to a bass recorder. For a better understanding of how Bingham presents the piece and how I rearranged it, see the facsimile of his original print.
