Jan Jaap Langereis (1962 - ):  Vivaldi in Aria Curva
scoring: AAA
I composed this piece at end of September 2019, almost completely in my head, riding my bike back home from my choir rehearsal. Once at home, I wrote it down.
It’s an ode to Vivaldi, full of clichés and well-known melodies from his Quattro Stagioni concertos. The central piece is the Stabat Mater’s melody, one of my favourite pieces.
Jan Jaap Langereis

About the title
In the beginning was the album A Rainbow in Curved Air (1967) by Terry Riley: a seminal work for the development of progressive music in the late Sixties and in the Seventies. Then, the progressive group Curved Air – who took its name from that album – recorded Vivaldi (1970), a piece obviously inspired by the music of the Venetian composer; its theme is the beginning of Vivaldi in Aria Curva.

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695):  St Martin’s Lane
source: The Virtuous Wife (1694) - Z 611
scoring: SATB
This is the arrangement of a movement from the suite composed by Purcell for the comedy The Virtuous Wife in 1694.
The bare textless melody is found in other sources; above all in Playford’s The Second Part of the Dancing Master (1696) with the title St Martin’s Lane; also, in French sources with the title La Furstemberg.
We actually do not know who composed the melody: in my opinion it could be a popular tune that Purcell arranged making it popular.

Anonymous (XVIII cent.):  Sonata in F major
source: Manuscrit musical 161. Manuscript preserved in Paris: Bibliothéque Municipale de Versailles, No. 7
scoring: AA
Hardly this piece can be defined a «Sonata», since it just consists of two fast movements.
The absence of slow movements may be caused by the style of the composition, based on the trumpet obbligo. That is, the melody mainly uses natural harmonics and play staccato with plenty of repeated notes, like a trumpet plays.

The source of this arrangement is a collection of songs, both sacred and secular, edited in Germany by Heinrich Albert in 1648. The song bears sacred German lyrics beginning with «Nimm dich o meine seel in acht», but the music had been already used in the Netherlands with the sacred lyrics beginning with «O Heyligh zaligh Bethlehem».
The melody was also used by van Eyck for his variations: see the related entry above.

Anonymous (XVI cent.):  Wohlauf, gen Bethlehem in Eil’, Old German Christmas carol
scoring: AATB
The source of this German carol is the Weihnachtsalbum (1887) by Karl Riedel (1827 - 1888). Riedel claims that the lyrics are of the XV century, but does not say anything about the music. In all likelihood, the melody is original, while the harmonisation could be by himself.
I arranged the whole composition for recorders, heavily changing some passages of the lower parts and adding some divisions on the repeat of the first two lines.

The line of the bass is placed under the first eight bars only in the original print. Apparently, it must be repeated all the way until the end of the piece, but that does not always work; so I had to change the line of the bass – when necessary – to adapt it to the succesive sections.
