George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759):  See the conqu’ring hero comes
source: Oratorio Joshua - HWV 64
scoring: SAATB
This famous chorus was first composed in 1747 for the oratorio Joshua (HWV 64). It was an immensely popular piece and Handel soon added it to another oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (HWV 63), which had premiered the season before. When a friend said to Handel that in his opinion the composer had composed better things than «See the conq’ring hero comes», Handel replied: «You will live to see it a greater favourite with the people than my other fine things».
In 1884 the Swiss writer Edmond Louis Budry wrote new French words to this composition, creating the Easter hymn «À toi la gloire, O Ressuscité!», which was later translated into English as «Thine be the Glory».
In Ireland the hymn is associated with Christmas as well as Easter. With German lyrics it is sung as an Advent hymn beginning «Tochter Zion, freue dich».

Due to its narrow range, the upper line may be performed on any kind of recorders. It is also possible to transpose the piece to a more convenient key.

George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759):  Concerto in F major, HWV 314 - Op. 3, No. 3
scoring: A (Harpsichord)

There is little doubt that this concerto grosso was compiled by the English publisher Walsh from a number of pieces by Handel; in particular from the chandos anthem «My song shall be alway» and a fugue for keyboard in G major – HWV 606. The original score – that is, the one that Walsh published – is for solo flute (oboe), solo violin and strings.

We arranged it for a treble recorder and concertato harpsichord.

The original score in E major reads: «Flauto, o altri stromenti». Due to its narrow range, the recorder part may be performed on any kind of recorders. If the bass line is played on a bass recorder, the upper line should be played by a soprano.

source: Der Fluyten Lust-hof (Amsterdam 1649-54), No. 30

These are the theme and some variations of a sarabande by Francois de Chancy (c. 1600 - 1656) printed in Eyck’s collection. I transposed bits of Eyck’s work to fit them to a treble recorder and added a continuo part of mine. This does not want to be a faithful transcription, but rather a loose interpretation of Eyck’s material, which in any case already differs from Chancy’s work.

There is a structural thread that runs through these distant works:
Generic chaconne → Pachelbel’s Canon → Alexandrov’s National Anthem of the CCCP → Village People’s Go West → Pet Shop Boys’ version of the same song.
My work is based on this relationship without any intention of comparing the quality of these compositions at all.
