In the very first years of the 18th century were published in Amsterdam four collections of music by English composers – or who flourished in England – called Airs Anglois and specifically aimed at treble recorders in various combinations: that is, solo recorder, one recorder and continuo, two recorders. The editor of all the collections, and also composer of some of the pieces, was one George Bingham, who is ignored by all the modern sources of information. As it is stated on the title page, he was a music teacher, since all the four collections are dedicated to «Messieurs ses Disciples».

The original print was made with great care: there are very few music mistakes, the pieces are sorted by key signature and sometimes arranged in suite.

Our transcription thoroughly follows the source; we simply scored the music that originally was printed in two oblong booklets. The first one bears the running title «Fluto», the other one «Basso». There are no continuo figures throughout the collection.

All accidentals in the source are reproduced in the edition, even when they may seem redundant under modern conventions. Editorial accidentals are smaller. In both cases, accidentals remain in force throughout the bar unless specifically cancelled.
