info       title page
In the early years of the eighteenth century, four collections of music by English composers – or those who flourished in England – were published in Amsterdam under the title Airs Anglois, specifically for treble recorders in various combinations: solo recorder, one recorder and continuo, two recorders. The editor of all the collections, and composer of some of the pieces, was a George Bingham, who is ignored by all modern sources. As stated on the title page, he was a music teacher, as all four collections are dedicated to «Messieurs ses Disciples».
The original print was made with great care: there are very few musical errors, the pieces are arranged by key and sometimes by suite, even if the pieces in the same suite are by different composers.
Our transcription is faithful to the source; we have simply transcribed the music as it was originally printed in two oblong books. The first has the running title ‘Fluto’ and, where appropriate, ‘Fluto Primo’; the other has ‘Basso’ and, where appropriate, ‘Fluto Secondo’. The frequency of continuo figures is uneven throughout the collection; for example, the pieces attributed to James Paisible bear no figures, while Bingham’s are rich in them.
