Nicolas Chédeville, Il Pastor Fido, Sonates pour la musette, viele, flûte, hautbois, violon, avec la basse continüe. Del Sig.r Antonio Vivaldi. Opera XIIIa. (Chez M.e Boivin, Paris [1737]).

info       title page
This collection of six sonatas was long thought to be an authentic work by Vivaldi. We now know that it is the work of the French composer Chédeville, who wrote these sonatas in the Italian style, in some cases using themes taken from actual works by Vivaldi.
The first target of Chédeville’s work is the musette, a kind of small bagpipe played with bellows, which has the same range as the treble recorder (F3 - D5). In 18th-century French music, the two instruments often shared the same repertoire, so these sonatas are well suited to the recorder.
