Andrea Bornstein (1956 - ):  Ciaccona from Bach motet BWV 230
scoring: A (Harpsichord)
This ciaccona is based on the last twenty bars of the «Alleluia» from the motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden – BWV 230 by J.S. Bach.
All the contrapuntal material is taken from the choral score: I have simply arranged it for treble recorder and concertato harpsichord.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741):  Io son quel gelsomino vicino al ruscelletto
source: Arsilda, Regina di Ponto (Venice 1716)
scoring: SAABB (Harpsichord)
This aria is interesting because it is rare to find an obbligato part for the harpsichord in this type of composition, instead of a simple continuo line.
By transposing this air a semitone higher, all the string parts became comfortable for the recorders with only minor adjustments.
Theoretically, the soprano part should be played on a tenor recorder, but the soprano gives it more emphasis.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741):  Concerto in A minor/C major - RV 463
scoring: ATTB (Bass instrument)
This concerto is peculiar in its key signature, as the first movement is in A minor, but the last two movements are in C major.
However, it works very well for recorders and a bass instrument.

Andrea Bornstein (1956 - ):  Variations on Frescobaldi’s Aria «Se l’aura spira»

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741):  Largo in C major
source: Concerto in A major - RV 519
scoring: ATB
This piece is surprisingly suitable for three recorders ATB simply transposing it a third higher. No notes had to be changed, and the arrangement can also respect the homogeneous timbre, since it was composed for three strings, while we play it with three recorders.

Raphael Courteville (c. 1675 - 1772):  The Charms of Bright Beauty
scoring: A (Bc)
The original print is a flying leaf by an unknown publisher, but it looks like a Playford print.
The song is part of the incidental music for the drama Aureng–zebe by John Dryden. Some of the music was composed by Henry Purcell in 1692, so this song must also have been composed around that year.
The original score in A major for singer and continuo is followed by the singer’s part transposed to F major «FOR THE FLUTE», i.e. a treble recorder. This was common practice in England and made the piece officially a song for recorder and continuo.

It is amazing, after 45 years of studying and transcribing early music, how I still manage to find such a little gem as this song by a composer – Courteville – who I only knew from his recorder music.

Christoph Graupner (1683 - 1760):  Suite in G major - GWV 854
scoring: STB
Chalumeaux are musical instruments very similar to recorders, especially because of their similar range. To adapt this suite to recorders, it was enough to transpose it a fifth higher from C to G major.
The only problem is the frequent use of dynamic markings: since recorders are not comfortable playing piano and forte, I think the best solution is to play this piece with more than one recorder per part, leaving three recorders playing solo in the piano phrases.

This piece begins in a key unfriendly to the recorder (G# minor), but then modulates several times until it ends in Bb major.
It is a very interesting piece, both for the difficulty it presents to the performer and for the beauty of the melody.

source: 6 Organ Concertos. Op. 4 (London 1738)
scoring: AA (Harpsichord)
Within Handel’s Opus 4, which includes the organ as a solo instrument, this sixth concerto is special for two reasons: firstly, two treble recorders are provided, and the harp takes the place of the organ. For more details, see our transcription of the original in the related entry.
Our arrangement retains from the original score the recorder parts accompanied only by the harpsichord (instead of the harp), and ignores the doubling of the strings. The recorders play little and their parts are relatively easy, so the piece is suitable for performance by beginners to teach them the concerto form. Bear in mind, however, that this is Handel, so the music is always of a high quality!

I propose it here a tone lower for treble recorder, tenor recorder and continuo. The transposition did not require any adjustments, and although the tenor might not be able to play the low Eb comfortably, the composer seems to have deliberately avoided it.
There remains the unfamiliar sequence of movements, i.e. two slow followed by two fast, but this is what English composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries got us used to!

This is my arrangement of the original concerto (sonata) for treble recorder, two violins and basso continuo.
The part of the two violins fits quite well with two treble recorders and the result is remarkable.
I worked on the revision and publication of this concerto more than 20 years ago, and now I still find things to revise and discover beautiful new passages in it. It really is remarkable music!

scoring: AB
This is the last variation of Pachelbel’s Aria Tertia. It is quite interesting because while the whole set of theme and variations is in three parts, this one is a bicinium that fits very well AB recorders; with just the exception of a final low C in the bass line at bar 4.

Giovanni Battista Vitali (1632 - 1692):  Trio Sonata 2 in G major
source: Sonate da camera a tre. Due violini e violone. Op. 14 (Modena 1692)
scoring: AAB or ATB
The best recorder group for this suite would be ATB, and indeed I have played it with this combination in my recordings. However, as the second line reaches the high D, most performers will prefer to play it on a treble recorder, although the almost constant low range of this line would result in it being a little suffocated.
